President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Green New Year’s Resolution

Embarking upon a new year signifies commencing the journey of existence on an unwritten slate. It presents an occasion to initiate anew, paving the way for a fresh beginning and charting a different course in terms of routines, practices, convictions, relationships, attitudes, and other inherent factors influencing human conduct. Recognizing this chance to start afresh, individuals commonly formulate New Year resolutions to enhance self-efficacy and personal growth. The impact of human activity on Earth is the paramount threat to human survival and the sustenance of life on the planet. The repercussions of human actions on the environment serve as the primary catalyst for the planetary crises of climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss. Consequently, altering the determinants of human behavior should be the central focus in addressing these critical 21st-century challenges. In light of this, adopting personalized and purposeful intentions that translate into positive climate actions, encapsulated in the form of green resolutions, should become an obligatory civic duty for all individuals, irrespective of age. Quoting Barack Obama, the former President of the United States, "We are the first generation to feel the impact of climate change and the last generation that can do something about it." Therefore, it becomes imperative for everyone to alter their approach to nature to secure a habitable planet for current and future generations. As we step into 2024, we are presented with another opportunity to strengthen our commitment to building resilience, adapting, and mitigating the effects of climate change. Individual efforts are crucial for tangible outcomes, surpassing the rhetoric, financial contributions, and decisions made at climate conferences like COP28. Having led Nigeria's campaign for nature-based solutions at the last UN Climate Change conference, where President Bola Ahmed Tinubu demonstrated unwavering commitment, it is evident that substantial action is needed to combat extreme weather conditions, disasters, and natural losses. To contribute significantly, I have devised ten New Year resolutions that, if conscientiously followed, serve as a remedy for sustainability and harmonious coexistence with nature: 1. Plant and nurture a minimum of 50 trees in 2024, encouraging my immediate family to do the same. 2. Minimize pet waste by utilizing water dispensers and bottles in both office and home settings. 3. Rely exclusively on renewable energy for home energy needs. 4. Undertake construction projects with minimal disruption to nature, respecting wetlands, waterways, and vegetation. 5. Reduce air travel and offset carbon footprint by planting a tree for each international trip. 6. Utilize reusable bags for shopping to reduce waste. 7. Dedicate at least one day per week to a plant-based diet. 8. Support green stores and choose recycled items to promote circularity. 9. Consciously minimize wastage of natural resources, protect animals and plants, and encourage family members to do the same. 10. Transition personal automobiles to CNG-powered vehicles in 2024 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. While some of these resolutions may appear resource-intensive, many only necessitate a shift in attitude and habits to contribute incrementally to climate action, yielding substantial benefits in the long run. I invite fellow Nigerians to partake in this endeavor by documenting their green resolutions for 2024, publicizing them, and actively adhering to the commitments. Victory in the battle against climate change is contingent upon collective and personal involvement. Wishing all Nigerians a joyful, prosperous, and environmentally conscious 2024.
